New Language Requirements For NHS Doctors

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley, plans to push through reforms which will be require doctors to prove their English language proficiency before gaining the right to practice in the NHS. Under the current system any doctor from within the EEA does not have to undertake any kind of language testing before being able to practice in the UK. The proposed changes will mean that senior doctors who evaluate other doctors’ fitness to practice, of which there are 500 in England, would also be responsible for ensuring that new doctors have a sufficient command of English to be able to work safely and effectively within the system. These proposed changes have been prompted by a few high-profile cases in which communication issues have led to the death of patients.
