The University of Cambridge, Karolinska Institutet Sweden and University College London top the list of the best medical and pharmaceutical Universities in Europe while Harvard University ranks #1 on the global ranking.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has published its annual global ranking for the top medical and pharmaceutical universities in Europe and from around with the world. ARWU used six objective indicators to rank world Universities, which includes the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution. More than 1000 universities are ranked by ARWU every year and the best 500 are published.
This ranking does not only represent excellence in teaching and research but it also signifies a university’s capacity to compete in the global higher education marketplace. According to the ranking, University of Cambridge ranks #1 in Europe with a total score of 68.6 out of 100. Other European universities that made the top list are University of Oxford, ranking #4 with the total score of 58. The Imperial college of Science, Technology and Medicine ranks #5 with a total score of 57. The University of Nottingham ranks #6 with a total score of 53.8 and King’s College London ranks #6 with a total score of 52. Leiden University Netherland ranks #7 on the list with a total score of 50.2. The University of Munich ranks # 8 with a total score of 47.1.
Universities outside Europe that made the top list include Harvard University, ranking #1 on the global ranking with a total score of 100 out of 100. Harvard University has always taken the top spot of the survey since its inception in 2003. The University of California, the University of Washington, John Hopkins University and Columbia University, all in USA, rank from #2 to #5 also on the global ranking.
