Consultant in General Radiology with an interest in Breast Radiology for Ireland


General Description:

The Hospital provides a comprehensive range of services to emergency and elective patients on an inpatient, outpatient and day care basis. The Hospital is an acute 340 bedded hospital. The mainstream acute services provided by the Hospital cover the following specialties: Emergency Medicine, General & Colo-Rectal Surgery, Breast Care, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Medicine, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Respiratory Medicine, Nephrology, Oncology, Palliative Medicine, Haematology, Microbiology, Pathology, Anaesthesia, Radiology, with ENT, Ophthalmology, Oral and Maxilo-Facial, Orthodontics, Dermatology and Rheumatology provided on an Out-Patient only basis. A full range of clinical and non-clinical support services are provided, including Theatres, CSSD, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Medical Records, Social Work and Therapies. Services are provided on a regional basis with support provided to another hospital in the area in respect of Nephrology Services. Outpatient clinics are also provided at Community Hospitals in our catchment area across many specialities. The workforce of approx 1800 staff provide a range of highly specialised services extending to 161,000 people.

The Radiology department offers a full range of services, including MRI, CT, Dexa Scanning, Interventional Radiology and Mammography. The hospital has a fully integrated and supported PACS system in situ. The Hospital is designated – in conjunction with a larger University hospital in the area – is a satellite Centre of Excellence for Breast Care. Radiology is a central component of the triple assessment treatment model. The hospital also has strong links with UCHG for Colo-Rectal and Urology services. Given our unique geographical location, the Hospital is striving for selfsufficiency in respect of clinical service delivery to our catchment population, and this post will assist in this process There are 7 approved Consultant Radiologist positions at the Hospital. The busy Radiology Department provides a comprehensive range of General and Specialised imaging services to our patients in a digital environment. The patient population includes neonates, paediatrics and in-patients and outpatients of all age groups and abilities. Both adult and paediatric imaging are provided across a wide range of specialities. A service is also provided to primary care clinicians in the District Hospitals. The General department comprises of 3 digital X Ray rooms, Digital fluoroscopy, and theatre imaging. The department has a CT scanner installed in 2014, MRI scanner installed in 2007 and a digital Mammography machine installed 2008. Outpatients Department is off site currently (has a dedicated digital XRay Room with dental equipment) There are 3 Ultrasound scanners (1 Portable) and NIMIS PACS and McKesson RIS are in the process of being installed. The Radiography staff currently provide an onsite, on-call service for the Emergency Department and inpatients with off- site call for CT scanning. Letterkenny Radiology Department is the main diagnostic provider for Donegal. The Breast Clinic facilitates patients from Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan. The re-build of the new Radiology Department will commence in January 2017. This will include of a new state of the art Interventional Suite which will enable to us to provide examinations which are currently outsourced. Additionally a second CT scanner and new conference room will be added to the department. Each modality has a dedicated Clinical Specialist (CT, MRI, US, Breast & PACS).

In summary the post is required to continue the provision of a comprehensive radiology service at the Hospital. As a radiology department catering for a busy University Hospital there is scope to develop and maintain the broad range of radiology services that are provided. The new interventional unit in the hospital will provide opportunities to expand present Interventional Radiology Services. As such preference will be given to radiologists with experience in Interventional Radiology. The post holder will be part of a 1 in 7 on call rota, when all posts including this post are filled.


-          Initial contracts of 1 year  or 6 months.  

-          Gross anual salary 122.753€-160.893€ plus overtime. Approximate net monthly salary of 6000-7000€ net/month after tax and pension deductions. 

-          31 working days per Year holidays for Consultants+ public holidays (there is 9 in a year).

-          7 study days leave per year to attend conferences or further education for Consultants 

-          Up to 3000€ for educational funding for Consultants.



Requirements and Qualifications:


For Consultant level applications :


  1. Minimum of 7 years experience (after primary medical qualification) in the practice of the medical profession, of which no less than 5 have been devoted to your chosen specialty.
  2. Very high level of English (at least C1). Preferably with experience in an English speaking country.
  3. Registered with the IMC in the specialist register. We will help all candidates to do this if they are not yet registered
  4. All candidates that are not yet registered should be qualified as a specialist in the EU or alternatively should of had this title recognized in a EU member state and  3 years practice in this country as from the date of recognition.
