Hospital summary This is a large district general hospital serving some 360,000 people and with ambitions to become a centre of excellence. They have 614 acute and general inpatient and day case beds on site, 15 operating theatres in 4 different suites, buildings dating from 1793 to 2004 and 3,871 members of staff. They are located in the centre of the country amid pleasant countryside and only 1 hour from London. They have a busy accident and emergency unit, which provides one of the best performing emergency care services in the region and have achieved some of the best performances in reducing inpatient and outpatient waiting. Most surgical specialties are catered for including being a major cancer centre for H&N, gynaecology, urology and GI. They have an 8 bed ITU with adjacent HDU. It is a regional cancer centre and was chosen by the Department of Health in 2005/6 as one of four pilots to deliver shorter waiting times for patients with cancer. They are also developing local renal services and cardiology services as a specialism and looking at how they will need to reshape themselves to meet the needs of the increasing local population over the next 20 years. They provide a high level of neonatal intensive care and a highly regarded integrated child health service. Progressive expansion and rebuilding has been carried out since the hospital was originally built on its present site in 1793. In the last few years they have opened a high dependency unit, acute stroke unit, three new linear accelerators, new library facilities and a student accommodation block, an interventional cardiology centre and an inpatient renal unit.
